Tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) dichloride complex (RuCl2(PPh2)) is a light emitting molecule that can be used as an optical sensor. It emits light when it reacts with calcium carbonate. The emission intensity of RuCl2(PPh2) increases when the concentration of calcium carbonate is increased. This reaction can be used to quantify the amount of calcium carbonate present in a solution. RuCl2(PPh2) has also been shown to be effective as a catalyst for chemical reactions, and can be immobilized on a surface such as silicon dioxide or glass by adsorption.
