It is an analog of dinoprost, which is a potent and specific inhibitor of the enzyme prostaglandin synthetase. Dimethyl (2-Oxoheptyl)phosphonate has been shown to be more potent than dinoprost and has been used to synthesize other prostaglandin analogs, such as methyl esters. This compound is water soluble and has a pH of 10-11. It also has reactive carbonyl groups that can undergo hydrolysis reactions with acids or alkalis.
