Description

2-(6-Amino-8-bromo-9H-purin-9-yl)-5-(hydroxymethyl)oxolane-3,4-diol (BRL 37344) is a potent inhibitor of the ATPase enzyme, which is involved in maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential and regulating cellular proliferation. It also inhibits cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases, which regulate the production of cyclic nucleotides that are involved in cell proliferation and angiogenesis. BRL 37344 has been shown to inhibit the growth of human follicular cells in culture by blocking 2-adrenergic receptors and preventing cAMP synthesis.
BRL 37344 has significant anti-angiogenic activity. It inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production by reducing levels of VEGF mRNA and protein through inhibition of transcriptional activation and translation. This agent also inhibits tumor neovascularization by interfering with VEGF receptor signaling pathways.
