Dovatine (DOV 216,303) is a drug that has been shown to inhibit the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmitters. Dovatine blocks the reuptake of these neurotransmitters by acting on the presynaptic membrane of monoamine neurons. It is not selective for either serotonin or norepinephrine. Dovatine also has an antidepressant effect and decreases locomotor activity in rats. The drug has been tested for toxicity studies in rats and mice and was found to be safe at doses up to 500 mg/kg body weight. A study was done with a placebo-controlled group of participants who were given dovatine or placebo for one week. Participants who took dovatine reported less depression than those who did not take the drug. The results from this study are statistically significant but may not be clinically relevant because it was an intent-to-treat population that had no previous treatment for
