Tri(4-phenylbutyryl)glycerol (TBPG) is a metabolite of the lipid triacylglycerol. TBPG has been shown to be a biomarker for dehydrogenase deficiency, which is associated with bacterial translocation and clinical response to pharmacological treatments. TBPG is also used as a substrate in the assay of triglyceride lipase and benzoate, two enzymes that are involved in the metabolism of TBPG. Biochemical abnormalities associated with metabolic disorders may alter the concentration of TBPG in urine samples. The measurement of TBPG levels in blood serum may be useful for the diagnosis of biochemical abnormalities and metabolic disorders.
