• Description: Potassium niobate is a ferroelectric material that has been shown to emit light when heated. It is often used as an activator in lasers, and can be synthesized by thermal decomposition of potassium carbonate or sodium carbonate under pressure. The crystal structure of potassium niobate has been determined using x-ray diffraction data and shows the basic structure of a layered perovskite. When heated, it undergoes a phase transition from an orthorhombic to a cubic structure at around 160 °C.
