Lithium niobate is a ferroelectric material that has been used in optical devices, such as laser diodes, high-power light-emitting diodes, and infrared detectors. It is a lithium niobate crystal with a cubic structure, which has been shown to be an efficient medium for the propagation of light waves. Lithium niobate is transparent to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and has high UV absorption coefficients at wavelengths below 300 nm. This material can be used for optical imaging because it can be tuned to absorb different wavelengths of light. The material also exhibits thermal expansion characteristics that are linear and show no phase transitions up to temperatures of about 700°C.
