Insulin is a hormone that regulates the metabolism of glucose in the body. Insulin is produced by beta cells in the pancreas and released into the blood following a meal. The insulin binds to receptors on cells, causing them to take up glucose from blood for energy or storage. When there is insufficient insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream and causes an increase in blood sugar levels. Insulin injections are used to control the level of glucose in people with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes who cannot produce insulin themselves or those who need additional insulin due to other conditions such as pancreatitis or liver disease. The most common way of administering insulin is by injection subcutaneously (underneath the skin). The absorption rate varies depending on where it is injected, but it takes approximately 10 minutes for an injection site to become usable again after an injection has been given. The pharmacokinetic properties of insulin are dependent on pH and temperature; it's most stable at pH 7-8 and at low temperatures
