Alpha-hydroxyalprazolam can be detected in urine samples by gas chromatography with chemical ionization. It has a high affinity for plasma proteins, which may lead to false positive results. Alpha-hydroxyalprazolam also binds to benzodiazepine receptors and has been shown to have an antidepressant effect similar to lorazepam, although it is not as potent.
