8-Amino-1,3,7-trimethylpurine-2,6-dione is a compound that can be found in the leaves of the yerba mate tree. 8-Amino-1,3,7-trimethylpurine-2,6-dione has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) and has been used as an inhibitor of oxidative stress. It also has potentiating effects on other MAO inhibitors such as clorgyline and tranylcypromine. This compound is chemically synthesized from caffeine and noradrenaline and is a conjugate of these two molecules. The methylene group on the aminopurine ring is cleaved by bond cleavage to form caffeine and noradrenaline as well as an active methylene group. The orientation of this molecule determines its inhibiting or potentiating effects on MAO enzymes.
