Flavokawain A is a flavonoid compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of P-gp. The inhibition of P-gp by flavokawain A may be related to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and reduce nuclear DNA content. Flavokawain A also has a potent anti-inflammatory effect, which may be due to its ability to induce the expression of survivin, a protein that can promote cell survival. Flavokawain A is also able to induce the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro and has been shown to have significant anticancer properties in vitro. In addition, flavokawain A has been shown to inhibit the expression of response elements for various cytokines and chemokines as well as potent inducers of transcriptional activity.
