It is also used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and as a polymerization initiator. 1-Chlorotriacontane is soluble in water and has been shown to be effective against many microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae. The microbiocidal properties of 1-chlorotriacontane are due to its ability to form free radicals that damage DNA. The anion in this compound is chlorine, which can be released when 1-chlorotriacontane reacts with amines or other organic molecules. This reaction causes the release of chlorine gas and hydrochloric acid.
