Digitoxose is a glycoside derivative of digitoxin, which is a cardiac glycoside. Digitoxose has been shown to have an anti-arrhythmic effect on the heart by blocking potassium channels in the heart cells and thereby inhibiting the electrical impulse that triggers the heartbeat. Digitoxose also prevents the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which contributes to its anti-arrhythmic effects. Digitoxose has been shown to have a high affinity for rat liver microsomes and it is also metabolized in rat liver microsomes. The conformational properties of digitoxose were studied using X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy, both revealing a helix conformation with two turns per residue. Human serum has been shown to be capable of metabolizing digitoxose at a slower rate than rat liver microsomes.
