Flutimide is a prodrug that is used to treat influenza virus. It acts by inhibiting the function of cap-dependent translation initiation, which prevents the synthesis of viral proteins. Flutimide has also been shown to inhibit the replication of other viruses, such as HIV and herpes simplex virus. The drug is metabolized in vivo to sodium citrate and fluorine, with no evidence of toxicity. Flutimide has a pharmacokinetic profile that consists of rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and rapid elimination from the body. This drug has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on both carbocycle and heterocycle viruses, although it is not active against all strains of flu virus due to its lack of activity against influenza B virus.
