It is a sodium ion salt, which can be found in the extracellular matrix as part of the glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate. Iduronic acid has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in rats and mice and inhibitory properties against human osteosarcoma cells. L-Iduronic acid inhibits the synthesis of methyl glycosides by inhibiting the enzyme glucosyltransferase, which catalyzes the formation of glucuronoxylorxylan from glucose and xylose.
