2-(2-Pyridyl)malondialdehyde (2PMDA) is an organic solvent that has been shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. 2PMDA inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with the cell wall biosynthesis, which leads to cell death. The mechanism of action for 2PMDA is not well understood, but it is believed to involve surfactant effects on the bacterial membrane and inhibition of protein synthesis. 2PMDA was shown to be more effective than linezolid in vitro cytotoxicity tests using murine macrophages.
2PMDA may be used as a nanoassembly for drug delivery systems in order to improve its antimicrobial activity against staphylococci and other microbes.
