AICAR is also a substrate for adenylosuccinate synthetase. The use of AICAR as a pharmacological agent has been associated with increased levels of nucleotides in cells and tissues. This may be due to the activation of AMPK, which stimulates ATP production by breaking down ATP through oxidative phosphorylation.AICAR can be detected using chromatographic techniques, such as high performance liquid chromatography or thin layer chromatography.
