Description

S-adenosyl-L-methionine chloride dihydrochloride is a form of S-adenosyl-L-methionine. It is used as a nutritional supplement and has been shown to increase the production of antibodies in the body. This drug is also used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, because it inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes. S-adenosyl-L-methionine chloride dihydrochloride binds to the response element on DNA that regulates gene expression and inhibits polymerase chain reactions by blocking the binding of nucleic acids to their complementary strands. The mechanism of action of this drug has not been established but may be related to its ability to inhibit nuclear DNA transcription or cell proliferation by affecting camp concentration.
