Bis(triphenylphosphine)dicarbonylnickel is a nickel-based catalyst that can be used to synthesize ethylene from acetylene. It is an organometallic compound that can be used for the production of polyethylene or polypropylene. Bis(triphenylphosphine)dicarbonylnickel can also be used as a catalyst in the synthesis of cyanogen chloride, which is used to produce pesticides and herbicides. The mechanism of this reaction is still under study but it has been postulated that bis(triphenylphosphine)dicarbonylnickel may act as an electrophile, reacting with the hydrocarbon molecule. This would result in a radical mechanism and phosphate ligands being released from the metal complex.
