Pentamethylaniline is a nitro compound that contains an iminium group. It is a colorless liquid that has a characteristic odor. The emission spectra of pentamethylaniline consist of bands at wavelengths of approximately 254, 285, and 320 nm. When heated to decomposition, pentamethylaniline emits toxic fumes including nitrogen oxide and nitrous oxide gases. Pentamethylaniline reacts with amines to form the corresponding amides as well as with hydrazine to form the corresponding hydrazones. This reaction can be used for the determination of the amines present in a mixture by forming an infrared spectrum of the product.
