2-Methyl-1H,2H,3H,4H,9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole is a β-carboline alkaloid found in Banisteriopsis caapi. It has been shown to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline. 2-Methyl-1H,2H,3H,4H,9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole has been used as an oral treatment for hypertension and is also used in the synthesis of other β-carbolines. Symptoms of toxicity include blood pressure changes and dizziness. It may cause symptoms of toxicity when administered orally or topically to skin or mucous membranes. The toxic effects are due to its oxidase type metabolism.
