Gallium iodide is a compound that contains gallium and iodide ions. It is used as an oxidation catalyst in the production of polyolefins, chlorinated solvents, and other organic chemicals. Gallium(III) iodide has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, which may be due to its ability to bind with chloride yields and inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2. The structural analysis of gallium(III) iodide has been performed by x-ray diffraction data, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The mechanism of this reaction involves the formation of a complex between gallium(III) iodide and fatty acids. In addition, gallium(III) iodide can bind with guanine nucleotides in the brain to form a complex that blocks receptors for glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. This binding prevents glutamate from inducing brain cells to produce nitric oxide or hydrogen peroxide
