Cerium(III) phosphate can be prepared by reacting cerium(IV) oxide with phosphoric acid or ammonium phosphate. This compound forms well-defined crystalline structures with particle sizes varying from 10 to 300 nm in diameter. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of ceria-phosphate clusters through hydrogen bonding between water vapor and the hydroxyl groups on the phosphate ligands. These clusters then react with magnesium salt or sodium carbonate to form cerium(III) oxide
