Nickel(II) dimethylglyoxime is a ligand for nickel(II) which can be used in electrochemical reduction of sulfur dioxide. It is synthesized by the reaction of nickel(II) oxide and dimethylglyoxime. Nickel(II) dimethylglyoxime has been used in the desulfurization process of crude oil. The compound is stable up to 260°C and decomposes at a temperature of 350°C. The reaction time depends on the amount of sulfur dioxide in the solution, with higher concentrations requiring more time. The polymeric matrix stabilizes the ligands and prevents them from being lost during the process. Nickel(II) dimethylglyoxime has also been shown to reduce overpotentials by increasing current density, especially when applied in a polymeric matrix.
