Dixylyl disulphide is a protein with a sequence of Cys-X-Cys. The model system for the study of disulfide bonds is a protein in which the two cysteine residues are located at the same domain. In this case, the two cysteine residues are separated by one residue and form an intra-chain disulfide bond. The other type of disulfide bond that can be observed in proteins is between two different domains. This type of bond is called an inter-chain disulfide bond and occurs when two cysteine residues are separated by more than one residue. Disulfide bonds have been shown to be important in biochemical properties, as they allow proteins to fold into their active conformation. Disulfides also play an important role in cell death, as they can be reduced by redox reactions or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
