Desmedipham is a herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting photosynthesis. It is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthesis and blocks the conversion of carotenoids to chlorophyll. Desmedipham is used in analytical methods as a polyvinyl polymer that reacts with metal hydroxides to form polyvinyl complexes. These polyvinyl complexes have been used in studies on toxicity and sample preparation for herbicides. Desmedipham has been shown to have synergistic effects with other herbicides, such as vernolate, which prevents the development of resistant mutants in plants. Desmedipham has also been shown to cause eye disorders when administered to animals, as well as kidney damage in laboratory animals.
