Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride is a water-soluble coordination compound of cobalt. It is a ligand that has been shown to be a potential activator for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride was found to have an activation energy of about 45 kJ/mol and to undergo dehydrogenation at temperatures near 100 degrees Celsius. This compound has been studied in the presence of membranes, and it has been determined that it diffuses through the membrane system with a rate constant of 3 x 10-8 cm2/s. In control experiments, this compound was found to react with quinolinium ions at neutral pH.
