Description

7-Methoxybenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a condensation product that can be formed by reacting chloramine with 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde. This compound can also be produced by demethylation of 7-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene, decarboxylation of 7-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene, and nitration of 7-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene. The reaction of this compound with thiols produces the corresponding 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrobenzothiazoles. Bromination followed by hydrolysis produces benzo[b]thiophenesulfonic acid and bromine.
