Description

Bafilomycin B1 is a polyene antibiotic that has been shown to inhibit the transport of proteins across the bacterial membrane. It binds to bacterial cell wall and blocks the production of ATP, leading to cell death. This drug also inhibits protein synthesis in mammalian cells and can be used for the treatment of kidney disease. Bafilomycin B1 inhibits protein transport by binding to one or more specific cysteine residues in the bacterial outer membrane, which prevents formation of an ATP-driven proton gradient that is required for active transport. The drug also inhibits protein synthesis by limiting the availability of amino acid precursors.
