5-(Hydroxymethyl)pyrimidine is a compound that belongs to the group of growth regulators. It is used in analytical chemistry to measure uridine and methylated uridine levels in biological samples. 5-(Hydroxymethyl)pyrimidine also has been shown to regulate morphology, dry weight, and postharvest fungitoxicity of plants. In addition, this compound inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding with primers and causing DNA strand breakage. This drug also induces cell lysis and inhibits the biosynthesis of nucleobases.
