2-Formyl-4,5-dimethoxybenzonitrile is an intermediate in the synthesis of many alkaloids. It can be synthesized by a cycloaddition reaction with oxypalmatine. This chemical is also a precursor to protoberberine and protoberberine alkaloids which are used as antihypertensive agents. 2-Formyl-4,5-dimethoxybenzonitrile is stable in air but reacts rapidly with water or alcohols.
