b-Aescin is a member of the escin family, a mixture of triterpenes. It can be isolated from horse chestnut trees and has been used medicinally for centuries. b-Aescin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and is used in traditional medicine to treat pain, inflammation, and edema. b-Aescin also inhibits apoptosis in HL60 cells, neuronal death in mice, and cytosolic Ca2+ levels. This drug also has inhibitory properties against a wide range of cell types by binding to nuclear DNA. However, it does not bind to mitochondrial DNA or the ryanodine receptor.
