Jujuboside A is a pentacyclic triterpene saponin that has been extracted from the rhizome of Gastrodia elata, also known as "jujube" or "Chinese date". Jujuboside A has been shown to have a beneficial effect on human serum. The pharmacokinetics of jujuboside A in rats was studied by measuring its blood concentration after intravenous and oral administration. This compound was found to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and cathepsin D, which are involved in inflammatory processes. Jujuboside A has also been shown to be effective against various human pathogens including Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and HIV-1.
