Description

Luteolin is a natural phenolic compound that is found in plants. It has been shown to have biological properties, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Luteolin is also used as a food additive, in which it can be extracted from the plant by acetate or etoac extraction. The chemical structure of luteolin consists of a flavone nucleus with an attached sugar molecule at the 5 position. The nmr spectroscopic data for luteolin are consistent with the structure of this compound. Luteolin has been shown to inhibit mucin gene expression in human keratinocytes, which may be due to its ability to inhibit epidermal growth factor (EGF) activity.
