Notoginsenoside R1 is a compound of the radix notoginseng. It has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect, which is mediated by the upregulation of Bcl-2 protein expression and inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6) production in a rat model of renal injury. Notoginsenoside R1 also has nerve growth factor activity, which may be due to its ability to modulate the rate constant for axonal transport. Notoginsenoside R1 also inhibits PC12 cells proliferation and induces apoptosis, which is mediated by the activation of caspase 3 and 9.
