Protodioscin is a natural compound that has been shown to have beneficial effects on mitochondrial functions, cellular physiology, and signal pathways. Protodioscin has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It also inhibits the dextran sulphate-induced rat pulmonary edema model, as well as the inflammatory response in mice with acute lung injury. The mechanism of action of protodioscin is not known, but it may be related to its ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and other enzymes through an unknown mechanism.
Protodioscin is structurally similar to pyrazole ring compounds such as lovastatin, which are pharmacological agents used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
