Description

Timosaponin A-III is a saponin compound that is found in the roots of Timosaponis chinensis. It has been shown to have anti-cancer effects in vitro, as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In particular, it inhibits the function of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and prevents its translocation from the Golgi apparatus to the cell membrane. This decreases the efflux of anticancer drugs from cells. Timosaponin A-III also has an effect on cyclin D2, which is a protein that regulates cell cycle progression. The hypoglycemic effect seen in animal studies may be due to its synergic effect with insulin and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Timosaponin A-III also has significant cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells, which are a type of leukemia cells. It binds to response elements on DNA and activates transcription factors such as NF-κB and AP1,
