Alpha-furfuryl octanoate is a fatty acid ester that is used as a viscosity agent in cosmetics. It has been shown to be effective as a coating agent for analytical chemistry and encompasses the chromatographic separation of ester compounds. Alpha-furfuryl octanoate is synthesized from alpha-bromoacetic acid and furfural, which are both commercially available compounds. It can also be prepared by reacting alpha-chloroacetic acid with furfural. Alpha-furfuryl octanoate consists of an alpha-bromoacetic acid moiety and an octanoic acid moiety, which are connected by a double bond in the 1,2 position. This compound has been shown to have excellent stability and resistance to oxidation.
