2,3-Dichloro-4-methoxyphenol is a phenolic compound that is found in plants. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of plants by hydroxylation and inhibiting the synthesis of lignin. This can be achieved by applying 2,3-dichloro-4-methoxyphenol to the leaves of plants in a controlled manner. The herbicide is absorbed through the leaf surface and then transported to other parts of the plant. The herbicide can also be applied as a preplant treatment to control weeds and grasses before planting crops. 2,3-Dichloro-4-methoxyphenol is used on crops such as wheat, barley, oats, corn, rye, rice, sorghum and sugar cane. It has been shown to have low toxicity for humans when consumed orally and does not cause cancer or reproductive effects.
