Description

Dacarbazine is a chemotherapy drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells and has been used for the treatment of certain cancers. It is a prodrug that, after being converted to its active form, binds to the penicillin-binding protein in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Dacarbazine has minimal toxicity in humans due to its low bioavailability following administration. The drug can be given intravenously or orally, depending on which type of cancer it is used to treat.

Dacarbazine has been shown to be effective against solid tumours such as breast cancer and melanoma, but not against blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphomas. Dacarbazine also has potent inducers that react with nitrogen atoms present in DNA bases; these reactions are important for many biological processes including DNA
