1-Methyl-L-proline HCl is a propionyl ester of L-proline. It has been shown to lower blood pressure in rats and pigs, but has a low bioavailability due to its hydrolysis by alkoxycarbonyl esters. 1-Methyl-L-proline HCl is used as an active oxygen species scavenger and has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia models. This drug also binds to the active site of the enzyme prolinate oxidase, leading to inhibition of the enzyme's activity. 1-Methyl-L-proline HCl can exist as either a racemic mixture or as two stereoisomers (R and S) that are mirror images of one another. The R stereoisomer is more potent than the S stereoisomer, which may be due to differences in their rate of absorption across cell membranes.
