• Description: Amino acids 1-18 of the 28 amino acid peptide hormone Ghrelin which has various effects on the body, including stimulating appetite, nutrient sensing and meal initiation. It has also been found to regulate insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity and asserts its functional affects through acting as an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R). Ghrelin is able to associate with the GHS-R due to it containing a unique N-octanoyl group which is linked to its serine 3 residue covalently. Its wider functions such as glucose homeostasis, energy homeostasis, cardio-protective effects, its role in bone metabolism and its potential to be a target for cancer means that it can be used to develop therapies for a whole spectrum of diseases.
