Nitidulidin is an antiparasitic, antibiotic, and antiviral agent that targets the DNA of microorganisms. The compound is a natural product isolated from the metagenomic library of a soil sample from the Antarctic Dry Valley. Nitidulidin binds to DNA and inhibits the replication of DNA or RNA synthesis by inhibiting the transcription or translation of mRNA. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV-1 in both cell culture and animal models. This drug may be effective against other viruses such as hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, human papilloma virus type 16 and Epstein-Barr virus. Nitidulidin has also been shown to inhibit fungi such as Candida albicans with MIC around 10 μg/mL.
Nitidulidin is water soluble and stable in neutral pH conditions. The compound demonstrates high purity with less than 0.5% impurities detected by HPLC analysis.
