It is involved in regulating the release of inflammatory mediators and cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and MCP-1. HMGB1 also plays a role in activation of neutrophils and macrophages. The recombinant form of HMGB1 has been shown to be an excellent research tool for studying protein interactions and receptor ligand interactions.
