The enzyme 2-amino-3-[4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl]propanoic acid hydroxylase (2-AHPAH) is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, with a specific role in the conversion of histidine to 2-oxoglutarate. The enzyme has been studied extensively and has been shown to exist in two forms: the wild type and a mutant. The wild type form is found predominantly in liver, kidney, and brain, whereas the mutant form is found predominantly in muscle. The kinetic properties of these two enzymes have been determined by measuring their second order rate constants for catalysis.
