2-Phenoxybenzoyl chloride is an organic solvent that belongs to the class of phenoxyacetic acid derivatives. It is used as a reagent in acylation reactions, such as the conversion of isoquinoline compounds to diphenyl ethers. The reaction between 2-phenoxybenzoyl chloride and an acid catalyst leads to the formation of an ester. The hydroxyl group on the aromatic ring can act as a nucleophile and react with a carbonyl group (e.g., formaldehyde) to remove a hydrogen atom and form a double bond. This reaction is called hydrolysis. 2-Phenoxybenzoyl chloride has been shown to inhibit glutamate decarboxylase activity in vitro, which may be due to its ability to bind with the enzyme's heme cofactor and prevent it from binding with glutamate.
