- Styrene, p-(2-chloroethyl)-
Styrene is a monomer that is used in the production of many plastics and synthetic rubber. It is a colourless liquid with an unpleasant pungent odour. Styrene undergoes nucleophilic addition reactions with electrophiles such as chlorine or hydrogen chloride, which convert it to carbyl chlorides or carboxylates. Styrene reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce polystyrene, which is insoluble in water and has a low melting point. The polymerization of styrene can be achieved by copolymerization with other monomers such as vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, or methyl methacrylate. Copolymerization also increases the toughness of the polymer. Styrene can also be converted into polystyrenesulfonic acid (PSSA) by reacting it with sulfuric acid. PSSA is a highly soluble polymer that can be used for the production of ion exchange resins and ion exchangers for use in water treatment plants.
