7-Bromo-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole is a β-carboline alkaloid that has been reported to be a potent inhibitor of fatty acid synthase. It is also an active substance in the nervous system and has been shown to have anticancer activity. 7-Bromo-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole can exist as two different tautomers: the keto form and the enol form. This compound is produced by refluxing phenylacetic acid with nitroethane in dioxane. The stereoisomeric form of this compound is 1S,2R,3S,4S.
