Description

5-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3,4-dimethylthiazol-3-ium iodide is an inhibitor of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. It is used in the treatment of glaucoma and other conditions that are associated with increased intraocular pressure. Carbonic anhydrase converts carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and water in red blood cells, which increases the pH and decreases the concentration of chloride ions. 5-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3,4-dimethylthiazol-3-ium iodide inhibits this enzyme activity by binding to it. This stops the conversion of CO2 to HCO3-, which reduces the concentration of H+ ions in cell fluid and lowers intraocular pressure. The inhibition of carbonic anhydrase also slows down erythrocyte production in bone marrow resulting in a decreased rate of erythropoiesis.
