2-Bromo-4-phenylbutanoic acid is a biologically active isomer of 2-bromobutanoic acid that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. It can be synthesized by catalytic hydrogenation or by a Friedel-Crafts reaction with benzene and butanoic acid. The hydrocarbon substituents on the bromine atom are n-substituted, which makes it an acid ester. This compound has antihypertensive activity and also lowers blood pressure by decreasing peripheral vascular resistance. 2-Bromo-4-phenylbutanoic acid is also used to synthesize antihypertensive drugs like clonidine and methyldopa.
